Answer: It's inappropriate to wear shorts in Turkish mosques, because, there is a strict dress code. Women must cover their knees, shoulders and head, and men must cover their knees and shoulder, also, everyone must remove their shoes.

 

2.     The dress code for tourists is pretty liberal on Turkish beaches. (T)

Answer: They can wear shorts, t – shirts, and sandals or flip – flops on the Turkish beaches.

 

3.     Clothing customs in Turkey are "anything goes" for everyone. (F)

Answer: No. Usually Turkish people wear modest clothes and tourists wear casual comfortable clothing to visit places historic, however, to visit a mosque there is a strict dress code.

 

4.     The United States is very conservative about clothes. (F)

Answer: No. The dress code is pretty liberal, it´s common in the warmer months to wear casual clothes like shorts, sandals and T-shirt. Even in formal places like offices, women never have to cover their arms.

 

5.     It's appropriate for young Americans to wear wild clothes in religious institutions. (F)

Answer: No. Not anything goes in schools, formal restaurants and religious institutions.

 

6.     Flip-flops are inappropriate in formal restaurants in the United States. (T)

Answer: Probably. Because, generally for formal restaurants the dress code is a suit or a T-shirt with a blazer.

 

B.    B. PARAPHRASE. What are the main differences in the dress codes of Turkey and the United States? Use the Vocabulary from page 44 in your description.

 

The main differences in the dress code between Turkey and United states is that in USA the dress code is not so strict because generally in warmer the people wear casual clothes except in certain places like schools, formal restaurants and religious institutions. Instead, in Turkey the dress code is stricter, the women must cover their knees, shoulders and head, and the men must cover their knees and shoulder to visit a mosque. In turkey the dress code is more liberal only if you are on the beach.

 

C.    C. APPLY INFORMATION. Imagine you are going on a trip to New York in June, when the weather is warm or hot during the day and cool at night. You want to go to nice restaurants and visit historic places and parks. Plan your clothes for a one-week visit. Be specific. Explain your choices.

 

I would take a lot of casual clothes, because the weather there is so warm, so my choice would be some pairs of sandals or flip – flops, many shorts, maybe a pant, some T-shirts and beach clothes.
